KIRKLEY, ROBERT (1838 ~ 1926). Confederate veteran Robert Kirkley was born March 22, 1838 in Kershaw District, South Carolina to Robert Kirkley, Sr. and Nancy Gaskins. When the Civil War erupted, Kirkley enlisted with the Confederacy on April 9, 1861 in Camden, South Carolina.

While fighting for the Confederacy, Kirkley was captured at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863 and held at Ft. Delaware Prison until June 10, 1865. After the Civil War, Kirkley returned to South Carolina where he settled in Sumter. He married Mary Ann Brown and had five children before moving to Marlin, Texas and eventually Nacogdoches City, Texas.

After his wife died in 1904, Kirkley married Olivia Durrett Shafer Bartlow and had one more child. He eventually moved to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin and died there March 14, 1926. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the next day.
